Ashley School is located just outside of Deloraine and is part of Learning Services North under the Department of Education (DoE). Ashley School is located within Ashley Youth Detention Centre (AYDC), the only juvenile correctional facility in Tasmania, catering for youth aged 10 to 19. Our school has students from all DoE Learning Services across Tasmania.
Our philosophy is based on the belief that every child can succeed. Our teaching and learning practices are built on Restorative Practice, Positive Behaviour Support, a Trauma-Informed approach, and current best practice in student engagement and flexible learning provision. Student learning is personalised and differentiated, based on each student’s learning needs, interests and personal goals.
Our initial aim is to provide positive educational experiences for students who have been, in the majority, disengaged from educational settings long-term. We provide experiences where students can form positive relationships that support their educational development, with the aim of building confidence and capacity in functional literacy, numeracy and work-related skills. Following that, we aim to engage all students in meaningful educational provision based on an individualised learning plan that the students themselves negotiate with staff.
Students work towards goals they set that they can achieve while at our school, as well as setting longer term goals with the aim of transitioning into educational provision in the community and working towards creating positive future pathways.
