Northern Support School is a Learning Services North, Department of Education, Children and Young People support school, situated in the Launceston suburb of Ravenswood, Tasmania. Our school caters for students with disabilities from Kindergarten to Year 12, providing a specialised educational provision for more than 100 students.
There are 13 classes and numerous specialist classes including rebound, crash circuit, garden, community access, music, arts, HPE and protective behaviours based on the SoSAFE program. All classes follow the underlying principles of the TEACCH program; the highly structured routine and visual supports inherent in this system have proved to be highly beneficial to all our students. We also embrace a multi-modal communication approach by respecting and using all students’ augmentative and alternative communication.
We focus on cultivating students’ strengths and interests, improving educational outcomes and leading school improvement in support education underpinned by our Departmental values of respect, growth, courage and aspiration.

In Tasmania, most students with disability attend their local school. The Educational Adjustment Disability Funding model assists ALL schools in making the educational adjustments required by individual students.
Students may be eligible to attend a Support School when they have a significant disability which includes a moderate to severe intellectual disability. The student may also have severe physical disability and/or moderate to severe autism. There are three support schools around the State. There is a process once a year where a student can be nominated to attend a Support School. This process considers if the student is eligible to attend the support school.
Most students who attend Support Schools in Tasmania receive extensive levels of educational adjustments to support their access and engagement with education.
More information is available on the Supporting Student Need website about support for students with disability in Tasmanian government schools.
Enquiries from interstate schools and non-DECYP schools will be reviewed during the year by a placement committee as required, through the DECYP process.
Supports are provided in local schools and families are invited to contact their local school principal.
